Position: A1

My concept for this show was to ensure vocal clarity while also maintaining a balance between the instruments in the pit and the microphones. This show had a lot of harmonies, and I wanted to utilize them to fill the sound of the lead singer of each specific song without overpowering and losing their voice in the mix. I used microphones like lavaliers to get the clearest vocals from each of the singers. In slower songs, I used effects like delay and reverb on the voices to widen them and encapsulate the space and bring the audience into the emotional parts of the show. In collaboration with my crew, the stage manager, and the lighting designer, I made sure to repetitively run cues together in order to make the scenes run as seamlessly as possible.

Board Programming

This was the first show that I've mixed where I had a full understanding of EQ techniques, FX, and compressors. I spent a lot of time focusing on the vocal clarity of the voices and how I could manipulate them to fill the verb by using reverb plates and slap. I learned about how taking the extra voice to match the sound coming from the actors to what's coming out of the speakers is.

Microphone Bible

This was used to track the elements and placement of all the mic'd characters in the show. Specifically for this show, we rigged the mics through the actor's hair, and it was important for the A2 and crew to know which side of the part to mic the actors for clarity and the least amount of mic visibility.
